Barnyard millet is an ancient grain with a long history in India. Mentioned as Shyaamaka in the Yajurveda (c. 1500 BCE) and praised in the Sushruta Samhita for its nutritional value, it has been cultivated for centuries. Known for its resilience and short growing season, barnyard millet served as a dependable "famine food", providing reliable harvests during droughts and adverse weather. Today, it continues to be valued as one of India's traditional millets, combining cultural significance with sustainable agriculture and wholesome nutrition.
